Chess table

The chess board has a rectangular shape, made up of 9 vertical lines and 10 horizontal lines that intersect perpendicularly at 90 points. In the middle of the chessboard there is a space called “river” or “ha”, dividing the chessboard into two symmetrical parts. Each part has a square Chess arc, formed from 4 cells at vertical lines 4, 5, 6 from the last horizontal line of each part, with two diagonal lines drawn through.

According to convention, when looking at the chessboard from above, the lower part will belong to the White (or Red) piece, the upper part will belong to the Black (or Green) piece. The vertical lines on the White (Red) side are numbered 1 to 9 from right to left, while the vertical lines on the Black (Green) side are numbered 9 to 1 from right to left.

Arranging the Chinese chess board is done by arranging the chess pieces according to the following pattern.

Rules for playing chess

Instructions on how to play Chinese chess according to the rules

  • Champion: Champion must always lie within the arc, defined as a 3×3 square marked with an X-shaped diagonal line.
  • Hero: Moves diagonally 1 square per move and must always be in the same palace as the Hero.
  • Bishop: Moves 2 spaces diagonally (2 horizontal or 2 vertical) per move. Bishops are only allowed on one side of the board and are not allowed to cross the opponent’s side of the board. If there is a piece blocking the Bishop’s path, the move will be invalid.
  • Rook: Moves horizontally or vertically on the chessboard as long as it is not obstructed by other pieces.
  • Code: Move horizontally 2 spaces and vertically 1 space (or vice versa) per move. If there is a blocking piece located right next to the Knight, blocking the Knight’s path, the move will be blocked.
  • Cannon: The difference is that to capture a piece, Cannon must jump over exactly one piece. When not capturing pieces, Cannon’s path must be unblocked.
  • Rat (or Good): If Rat has not crossed the river, he can only go straight ahead. After crossing the river, you can move sideways 1 square or go straight 1 square per move.
  • Capture a piece: When a piece moves to a square that already has an opponent’s piece, the opponent’s piece will be captured and removed from the board.

When both sides are unlikely to win, the player should decide to draw the match. To avoid a match lasting too long, chess rules define 3 cases for a draw:

  • The move rule comes into effect: When the total number of moves reaches 120 moves (not counting moves that chase and check, as well as moves that react to moves that chase and check).
  • Law of progression: The game is considered to be progressing when a piece is captured or when the pawn has crossed the river and taken a step forward.
  • Move rule: When the total number of moves in the match reaches 300 moves.
